Beruni district

The Beruni district is located in the south part of the Republic of Karakalpakstan and covers 3,952 thousand sq. km (2,4% of the territory of the Republic). Population density is 39 people per square km. The district borders with Khorezm region and Amudarya, Karauzyak, Takhtakupir, and Ellikkala districts.
There is a town, 17 Mahalla Committees, 13 village community of citizens. The population of the district as per January 2008 is 154,967, including urban population 56,636 (36,5%) and rural population 98,331 (63,5%).
In 2007, 56 kindergartens provided pre-school education to 3059 children (16, 4% of the total pre-school age population). Currently there are 67 secondary schools hosting 30,157 pupils (99.9% access). There are also 6 professional colleges specialized in agriculture, construction, pedagogy, production, and social services with approximately 7,270 students attending.
There are 3 hospitals with 490 beds, 14 rural medical points, 11 drugstores, and 4 non governmental organizations. The number of medical doctors in the district is 332 persons, and the number of health care workers, incluiding nurses, community health personnel is 1567. Approximately 81% of the population has access to gas and 43,8% to drinking water, but communal infrastructures are decrepit and require rehabilitation and extension.
Irrigated agriculture plays an important role in the district socio-economic development. Cotton and wheat are cultivated widely. There is a cotton refining and cotton oil factory with cotton fiber taking the largest share of local production. Working age population was 85,2 thousand in 2007 with 53,4 thousand employed. The agricultural sector provides employment for 34,3%of the population. As of 2008 employment rates were estimated at 10,9%. In 2007, 3,110 persons were registered as unemployed out of whom 2,684 found employment.
