Chimbay district
Chimbay district is located on the north of the Republic of Karakalpakstan. The district occupies 21.9 thou. square km. which is 1,3% of the whole territory of the Republic. The density of the population is 46,2 person per 1 square km. The district borders with Karauzyak, Takhtakupir, and Kegeily districts. There is a town, 11 Mahalla Communities, and 11 village communities of citizens. The population of the district as per January 2008 is 99,386 with 51,6% living in rural areas.
In 2007 preschool education was provided by 34 kindergartens to 2,599 children for total coverage of 21,5%. There are 58 secondary schools for a total access equaling to 99%. There are 6 professional colleges specialized in agriculture, construction, pedagogic, and economics.
There are 3 hospitals with 520 beds, 21 primary health acre centres and 15 rural medical points, 11 drugstores, and 5 private organizations dealing with healthcare issues. The number of medical doctors in the district is 165, and the number of health care workers is 624. Approximately 98,6% has access to gas while 73,7% to drinking water but communal infrastructures are decrepit and require rehabilitation and extension.
The district economy relies on cattle, cotton, wheat, and rice. In 2007, the working age population was 55 thou. persons and there were 33,4 thou. persons employed in the district. Agriculture employs approximately 34,3% of the working population. Unemployment as of 1 January 2008 was equivalent to 8,4% of the working population. The number of unemployed in 2007 was 2,592 persons with almost al of them employed by the end of the year.
