Takhtakupir district

Takhtakupir district is located in the north of the Republic of Karakalpakstan. The district occupies a territory of 21,122 thousand square km. (12,7% of the whole territory of Karakalpakstan). The population density is 1,9 person per square km. Takhtakupir district borders with the Republic of Kazakhstan, and Beruni, Karauzyak, Muynak, and Ellikkala districts. There is a town, 3 Mahalla Communities, and 8 villages. In January 2008 the population was 39,733, including urban population of 16,416 (41,3%) and rural population 23,317 (58,7%).
In 2007, 14 kindergartens provided pre-school education to 829 children for a total coverage of 16,5%. Currently there are 24 secondary schools providing education to 6,298 pupils with total access estimated at 99%. Two professional colleges specialize in agriculture and construction for 1,969 students. According to administrative data 98,2% of the population has access to gas but communal infrastructures are decrepit and require rehabilitation and extension.
There are 2 hospitals with 200 beds, 11 primary health care points, 9 rural clinics, 5 drugstores, and a private health care organization. There are 472 medical doctors. 
The district economy relies on cattle rearing, cotton, wheat and rice. Working age population is estimated at 21,8 thou. with 13,7 thou. employed in 2007. Agricultural employment accounts for 34 % of all employment. In January 2008, approximately 7,6% of the total working age population was recorded as unemployed. In 2007 there were 1,449 registered unemployed with 1,189 finding employment during the year.
