Karshi district

Karshi district is located in the central part of Kashkadarya region. It borders Koson, Nishan and Mirishkor districts and Karshi city. The district was formed as a result of desert development. The total area is 0,9 thousand square kilometers. The district consists of Beshkent town, 80 villages, 15 Rural Citizens Councils and 37 Mahallas. As of 1 of January 2008, the total population was 184 000 people. 16,700 people lived in city (9%) and 166,300 people in rural areas (91%). The population density is 199,5 people per square kilometers.
As of 1 January 2008, there are 129 small production enterprises, 241 construction companies, 2,804 farming enterprises, 4 colleges, 62 primary schools, a lyceum, 28 kindergartens and a hospital. The population’s access to natural gas is 82.0 %, whereas 86.4 % of the population has an access to drinking water.
The agricultural sector takes the leading position in the economy, which is dominated by cotton and wheat production. Due to climatic resources, the district is mainly specialized in cotton and wheat production.
