Kitab district
Kitab district is located at the foothills of Takhta-Qoracha. The district borders Shahrizabz and Chirakchi districts, Samarkand region and Republic of Tajikistan. The total area is 1.8 thousand square kilometers with a population of 205.2 thousand people. There is a city, 12 Rural Citizen’s Councils, 149 villages and 26 Rural Citizen’s Councils.
As of 1 January 2008, there are 219 small industrial and 102 construction enterprises, 3,151 farmer enterprises, 5 colleges, 93 primary school, 3 lyceums and specialized schools, 27 kindergartens and 6 hospitals. Population’s access to natural gas is 68,1 %, whereas 89,9 % of the population has access to safe drinking water.
In 2007, 35,7% of gross agricultural output was produced by farmer enterprises, whereas 63,5 % was produced by dehkan enterprises. The total irrigated area is 9,9 thousand ha, whereas, the total area of pasture lands is 51,4 thousand ha. Vast pasture lands create very favorable conditions for cattle-breeding. Due to geographical location, the district is also specialized in vegetable production and horticulture.
