Nishan district

Nishan district is located in the central part of Kashkadarya region. The district borders with Mirishkor, Karshi, Guzar, Karshi city and Republic of Turkmenistan. The total area is 2,1 thou. square km. The population density is 48,6 people per square km. As of 1 January 2008, the total population of the district is 105,000 out of which 20 300 people lived in city (19,3%) and 84 700 in rural areas (80,7%). The district consists of Yangi Nishan city, 8 Rural Citizens Councils, 29 villages and 17 Mahallas.
As of 1 of January 2008 there are 41 industrial enterprises, 69 small construction companies, 2,707 farmer enterprises, 4 colleges, 35 secondary schools, 2 hospitals and 25 kindergartens.
Nishan’s geographical location favours live-stock breeding, as well as wheat and cotton production which are the main specializations of the district. “Talimarjon” hydroelectric power station, an industrial company of national significance is located in this district. The economy is diversified with a well developed agricultural sector, transportation and trade. 38,9% of agricultural production is derived from dehkan farmers and 59,7% by large farmers. Agriculture plays a key role in the district economy. Total irrigated land is 51,700 ha. Also there are 100,000 ha pasture lands creating favorable conditions for cattle-breeding. Population’s access to natural gas is 98.4%, whereas 84.5 % of the population has an access to drinking water.
