Shahrizabz district

Shahrizabz district neighbours Kitab, Chirakchi and Yakkabag districts. The district total area is 1.7 thou. sq. km. The administrative centre is Shahrizabz city, historical city that is known all over the world. There are 12 Rural Citizens Councils, 50 Mahallas and 117 villages. The favourable climate, historical and cultural heritage of the district creates good conditions for tourism, health and recreational activities, including ecotourism. As of 1 of January 2008, the total population was 288,9 thou., where 100.6 thou. (34,8%) reside in urban areas and 188,3 (87,2%) reside in rural areas. Population density is 166 people per sq. km.
There are 365 small production firms, 365 construction companies, 841 trade and public catering firms, 7 197 agricultural enterprises, 12 colleges, 111 secondary education schools, 71 kindergarten and 13 hospitals in the district. Population’s access to natural gas is 75.6 %, whereas 85.7 % of the population has an access to drinking water.
The district territory boasts many monuments and historical places, which along with a temperate climate of the district allow receiving tourists all-year round, given tourism infrastructure and networks are in place.
The economy of Shahrizabz district is diversified. Agriculture, production and trade take the leading position in the local economy. Its administrative centre is the second most important city in the region after Karshi.
